Frequently Asked Questions

Product Features & Capabilities

What are DragonPlate's modular connector systems and how are they used?

DragonPlate's modular connector systems are designed to assemble rigid structures using carbon fiber tubes without welding or specialty bonding. They include components such as friction grip clevises, tri-connectors, and vise lock ball joints, enabling adjustable, secure connections for custom builds like tripods, robotics, and aerospace structures. Note: DragonPlate does not offer pre-built tripods; the modular connectors are intended for custom projects. Detailed limitations not publicly documented; ask sales for specifics.

What components were used to build the custom tripod featured on DragonPlate's blog?

The custom tripod was built using DragonPlate telescoping carbon fiber tubes (7/8", 1", and 1-1/8" ID), telescoping collet kits (FDPCK-TELESCOPE-KIT-2 and KIT-3), friction grip clevises (FDPCK-MODCON1-FMLE-FRCTN), vise lock ball joint (FDPCK-MC1-VLBJ-H), and rubber feet (RMRBRCAP.875ID). The tri-connector was custom 3D-printed using carbon fiber composite PLA. Note: DragonPlate does not manufacture or sell tripods; these components are available for custom builds. Best fit for users comfortable with DIY assembly; those seeking ready-made tripods may want to consider alternatives.

What are the key features of the custom tripod built with DragonPlate components?

The tripod features adjustable telescoping legs and center shaft, a tri-connector with friction grip clevises for smooth angle adjustment, a built-in bubble level, a vise lock ball joint with 280° rotation and 23.5° tilt, and rubber feet for grip. Note: These features are specific to the custom build and not available as a pre-built product. Limitations include the need for custom assembly and sourcing additional parts like 3D-printed connectors.

What makes DragonPlate's modular connector system suitable for custom photography gear?

DragonPlate's modular connector system allows for precision, strength, and adaptability, enabling users to build custom photography gear such as tripods with adjustable legs, secure joints, and lightweight carbon fiber construction. The system is ideal for users needing bespoke solutions for stability and portability. Note: Custom builds require technical skill and access to compatible components; not suitable for those seeking plug-and-play solutions.

Technical Requirements & Documentation

Where can I find technical documentation and CAD models for DragonPlate components?

Technical documentation, including product catalogs for adhesives, carbon fiber sheets, and bonded fasteners, is available on DragonPlate's website. Downloadable CAD models can be accessed at dragonplate.com/cad-models to help integrate components into custom designs. Note: Some documentation may require registration or direct inquiry for access to detailed specs.

What resources are available to help with the design and assembly of custom structures using DragonPlate components?

DragonPlate provides detailed technical guides such as The Ultimate Guide to Carbon Fiber Design and Application, downloadable CAD models, and product category hierarchy documentation. These resources support customers in designing, assembling, and troubleshooting custom builds. Note: For highly specialized projects, consulting DragonPlate's engineering team or Element 6 Composites may be necessary.

Use Cases & Benefits

What industries and applications benefit from DragonPlate's modular connector systems?

DragonPlate's modular connector systems are used in robotics, aerospace, custom photography gear, industrial automation, and defense. Case studies include custom robotic arms, drone test beds, and composite chassis for wall-climbing robots. The system is best suited for professionals and organizations needing lightweight, durable, and customizable carbon fiber solutions. Note: Not all industries may find modular connectors suitable for mass production or standardized equipment.

Can DragonPlate components be used to build custom tripods or other photography equipment?

Yes, DragonPlate components such as telescoping tubes, modular connectors, and friction grip clevises can be used to build custom tripods and photography gear. The blog example demonstrates a tripod with adjustable legs and center shaft, but DragonPlate does not offer pre-built tripods. Limitations include the need for custom design and assembly; users must source or fabricate some parts themselves.

Pain Points & Solutions

What common problems do DragonPlate modular connectors solve for builders?

DragonPlate modular connectors address challenges such as joining carbon fiber tubes without welding, achieving adjustable and stable connections, and enabling custom builds for robotics, photography, and aerospace. They help reduce manufacturing complexity and allow for rapid prototyping. Note: Custom assembly may require technical skill and access to compatible tools; not all connection types are supported.

How does DragonPlate help with weight and performance optimization in custom builds?

DragonPlate's carbon fiber materials offer superior strength-to-weight ratios, making them ideal for lightweight yet durable custom builds. Modular connectors enable precise assembly and adjustment, supporting performance optimization in applications like robotics and photography. Note: Achieving optimal performance may require advanced design and engineering; not all builds will benefit equally.

Support & Implementation

How easy is it to start building with DragonPlate modular connectors and tubes?

DragonPlate offers ready-to-use carbon fiber tubes and modular connectors that can be cut, drilled, and bonded without specialized equipment. Technical guides and CAD models simplify the design process. Responsive customer support is available via phone (315-252-2559) and email (service@dragonplate.com). Note: Custom builds may require additional tools and design expertise; not all users will find the process straightforward.

Building a Custom Tripod with DragonPlate's Modular Connectors

At DragonPlate, we love exploring new ways to demonstrate the strength and versatility of our modular connectors. One of our team members, Ben, recently designed and built an innovative tripod using our carbon fiber tubes and modular connector components. While DragonPlate doesn’t manufacture or sell tripods, this internal project serves as a showcase of what’s possible using our system.

Inspired by a Problem

Ben was frustrated with flimsy camera tripods on the market. When one of the telescoping legs on his own tripod snapped, he decided to design something better—a tripod that was durable, portable, and elegant. The result? A fully functional camera tripod built with carbon fiber tubing and modular connectors.

How the Tripod Was Built

The tripod features three telescoping legs and one telescoping center shaft, giving it a compact collapsed length of two feet and an extended height of up to six feet. Ben used DragonPlate’s telescoping collet kits to provide easy adjustability for transport and setup.

The legs are joined to a custom 3D-printed tri-connector that integrates friction grip clevis joints, allowing users to adjust leg angles without compromising stability. The tri-connector itself is bonded around a central carbon fiber tube and printed using a carbon fiber composite PLA for a strong, lightweight hold.

Key Features:

  • Adjustable legs and center shaft using telescoping carbon fiber tubes

  • Tri-connector with Friction Grip Clevises for smooth, secure adjustment

  • Built-in bubble level for easy leveling

  • Vise Lock Ball Joint with 280° rotation and 23.5° tilt, allowing dynamic camera positioning

  • Rubber feet for grip on various surfaces
