They can easily be incorporated into existing designs to increase the structural performance by adding stiffness.

 

Our carbon fiber hat stiffeners are comprised of plain weave carbon fiber in both 0/90 and ±45 orientations, with 0 uni-directional carbon fiber to add stiffness and strength along the length of the hat stiffener. They are manufactured using a flame retardant epoxy resin, making them ideal for aviation and marine applications. To optimize the design, we have added the unidirectional only to the cap of the hat stiffener. This fiber placement lets us create a stronger and stiffer hat stiffener while minimizing hat stiffener weight. This design creates a high stiffness to weight ratio, and also creates a beam that is more torsionally rigid when bonded than an i-beam. The carbon fiber hat stiffener has a textured finish on the outside and on the flange surfaces to create an ideal bonding surface.

The carbon fiber veneer is tested and certified to pass the FAR 25.853(a) Appendix F vertical burn specification. Since flame retardancy is dependent upon both the resin system, as well as the geometry, orientation, and integration of the components into the overall assembly, we cannot guarantee any particular standard flame retardant structural component will meet and pass the specific burn testing necessary for your application. It is the responsibility of the customer to verify that these carbon fiber materials will meet the requirements for any specific application. If additional flame retardancy is required, many shapes can also be made with flame retardant carbon fiber prepreg materials, which have a higher degree of flame retardancy than our standard Dragonplate flame retardant products, and can be manufactured to meet both FAR 25.853 vertical burn testing, as well as smoke and toxicity requirements.
