Features & Capabilities

What performance advantages do DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes provide?

DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes are engineered for optimal strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for high-performance applications. They are highly resistant to corrosion, temperature extremes, and UV exposure, ensuring long-lasting durability. Advanced engineering tools like Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are used to optimize designs and reduce material waste. Note: For applications requiring extreme impact resistance or specialized properties, alternative materials may be more suitable.

Does DragonPlate offer custom sizes or fabrication for carbon fiber tubes?

Yes, DragonPlate provides custom fabrication services, including CNC cutting, custom sheet and tube sizes, and specialized laminate schedules to meet specific performance and design requirements. For more information, visit the custom fabrication page. Note: Lead times and minimum order quantities may apply for custom orders.

What accessories and connector systems are available for DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes?

DragonPlate offers a range of accessories, including adhesives, bonded fasteners, and modular connector systems (ModCon) for assembling rigid structures without welding or specialty bonding. For details, see the connector systems and adhesives & applicators pages. Note: Compatibility varies by tube type and size; verify before ordering.

Use Cases & Benefits

What industries and applications use DragonPlate roll-wrapped carbon fiber tubes?

Industries such as aerospace, robotics, medical devices, industrial automation, marine defense, and research institutions use DragonPlate roll-wrapped carbon fiber tubes for lightweight, high-strength structural components. Case studies include composite chassis for wall-climbing robots (nuclear/industrial robotics), drone test bed systems, and carbon fiber rockets. Note: For applications requiring electrical conductivity or extreme impact resistance, consult with DragonPlate for suitability.

What business impact can customers expect from using DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes?

Customers can achieve cost savings through optimized manufacturing, reduced material waste, and improved efficiency. For example, a custom carbon fiber robotic arm solution resulted in $1 million annual savings for an industrial automation client (case study). Additional benefits include faster lead times, enhanced product performance, and regulatory compliance. Note: Actual results depend on application and implementation; not all projects will achieve similar savings.

Technical Requirements & Implementation

How easy is it to cut, machine, or bond DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes?

DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes can be cut, drilled, and bonded using standard tools, but due to the abrasive nature of carbon fiber, proper tools and safety measures are recommended. CNC cutting services are available for precision and to reduce handling risks. Note: Improper handling can result in dust and safety hazards; always follow recommended guidelines.

How quickly can DragonPlate products be implemented into a project?

DragonPlate offers ready-to-use components that can be integrated immediately into projects. For custom parts, lead times depend on design complexity and order volume. Technical documentation, CAD models, and responsive support are available to streamline implementation. Note: Custom orders may require additional lead time; contact sales for specifics.

Support & Documentation

What technical documentation and resources are available for DragonPlate products?

DragonPlate provides product catalogs (e.g., for adhesives, tubes, fasteners), technical guides, downloadable CAD models, and a weights & specs page. Case studies and application guides are also available. Access resources at Weights & Specs and CAD Models. Note: Some resources may require registration or direct inquiry.

How can I get support or request a quote for DragonPlate tubes?

Contact DragonPlate customer service by phone at 315-252-2559 (Mon-Fri 8:30am – 5:00pm ET) or email service@dragonplate.com. You can also use the contact form on the website. Note: Response times may vary during peak periods.

Security & Compliance

What security and compliance certifications does DragonPlate hold?

DragonPlate has completed a CMMC Level 1 self-assessment (submitted to SPRS) and a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment to meet DFARS 252.204-7012 requirements. The company is actively advancing its cybersecurity program toward CMMC Level 2. DragonPlate products are manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 quality standards. Note: For the latest compliance status, contact DragonPlate directly.

Pain Points & Limitations

What common challenges do DragonPlate customers face, and how are they addressed?

Customers often face high manufacturing costs, long lead times for custom parts, and difficulty cutting or joining carbon fiber tubes. DragonPlate addresses these with FEA-optimized designs, stocked inventory, CNC cutting, and modular connector systems. Note: For highly specialized or extreme environments, additional engineering consultation may be required.

Dragonplate roll wrapped twill carbon fiber tubes are fabricated from a combination of unidirectional and woven twill prepreg material and cello wrapped for a gloss finish. The unidirectional layers are oriented to provide high bending stiffness and axial strength. The inner and outer layers provide a bias support in addition to an attractive appearance. This product is ideal for building lightweight frames and structures, tubular vessels, poles, column supports, and any other application where low weight and high stiffness are essential, yet appearance is also important.

Carbon Fiber Tube Faces

Three different unidirectional CF options are available in these tubes: 33 msi standard modulus (SM) PAN unidirectional carbon fiber, 57 msi high modulus (HM) PAN carbon fiber, and 110 msi ultra high modulus (UHM) Pitch carbon fiber. The benefit of the PAN carbon fiber is higher strength, whereas the pitch carbon fiber has higher stiffness, higher thermal conductivity, and lower thermal expansion (CTE nearly zero). Depending on the application, both are excellent options. For example, if the part requires maximum strength, then the standard modulus material would be the best choice. If additional stiffness is required, but the component must still retain most of the high strength properties, then the high modulus PAN carbon fiber is the better choice. If, however, the loads are low, for example in many automation and robotics applications, the ultra high modulus Pitch fiber can substantially increase the stiffness of a part. Properly designed, a carbon fiber part made from Dragonplate UHM carbon fiber can easily be stiffer than one made from steel, but at less than 1/5th the weight.

Although more expensive than our other carbon fiber options, Dragonplate HM and UHM carbon fiber tubes provide an opportunity for unprecedented weight savings, particularly in applications where minimum weight and deflection are critical. Dragonplate HM tubes are about 50% stiffer than aluminum, whereas the UHM tubes are as rigid as steel. Our standard offering includes tubes with 1/16" wall thickness; however, we are able to custom fabricate these tubes with 1/4" or more wall thickness upon request.

Since UHM carbon fiber material has certain export restrictions, customers are required to fill out a short form detailing the end use. Both the customer and application will need to be vetted before the product is able to ship. Please fill-out the PDF form and fax or email it back to us if you have ordered the UHM option.
