Features & Capabilities

What performance advantages do DragonPlate carbon fiber composites offer?

DragonPlate carbon fiber composites are engineered for a high strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and resistance to environmental challenges. They are designed to withstand impact through energy dissipation mechanisms such as fiber breakage and matrix cracking. For impact-critical applications, DragonPlate offers Kevlar or carbon/Kevlar hybrid products for enhanced toughness. Note: Carbon fiber is strongest along the direction of the fibers; multi-directional layups are used to balance properties. For applications with complex load requirements, consult engineering resources or request custom layups. Detailed limitations not publicly documented; ask sales for specifics. Learn more about FEA.

Does DragonPlate provide technical documentation and design resources?

Yes, DragonPlate offers a range of technical documentation and resources, including downloadable CAD models (CAD Models), detailed weights and specifications (Weights and Specifications), finishes information (Finishes Information), and a comprehensive guide to carbon fiber design and application (The Ultimate Guide). Note: Not all products have CAD models or detailed specs available; check the product page or contact support for specifics.

Are DragonPlate products compliant with industry standards?

All DragonPlate products are manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 quality standards at their facility in Elbridge, New York. For medical and defense industries, DragonPlate provides biocompatible and radiolucent materials that meet stringent regulatory requirements. Note: Not all products are biocompatible or radiolucent; verify compliance for your specific application. Learn about medical applications.

What industries commonly use DragonPlate's carbon fiber sandwich sheets with Nomex honeycomb core?

Industries that commonly use DragonPlate's carbon fiber sandwich sheets with Nomex honeycomb core include aerospace, robotics, defense, and industrial automation. These panels are selected for their lightweight, high-strength properties and are used in applications such as UAV structures, robotic arms, and high-performance enclosures. Note: Suitability for specific applications depends on load requirements and environmental factors; consult technical documentation or engineering support for guidance.

Can you share examples of customers using DragonPlate sandwich sheets in real-world applications?

Yes. DragonPlate's sandwich sheets and carbon fiber composites have been used by Frontier Electronic Systems for marine defense enclosures (case study), Eureka Dynamics for drone test bed systems (case study), and International Climbing Machines for wall-climbing robots in nuclear and industrial environments (case study). Note: These examples may use a range of DragonPlate products; verify the specific product used in each case.

Support & Implementation

How easy is it to implement DragonPlate sandwich sheets into my project?

DragonPlate sandwich sheets are prefabricated and can be cut, drilled, and bonded using standard tools and adhesives. Technical guides and downloadable CAD models are available to assist with integration. For custom solutions or complex requirements, DragonPlate offers design and prototyping services. Note: Some fabrication steps may require specialized knowledge or equipment for optimal results; consult technical documentation or support for guidance. The Ultimate Guide.

What support options are available if I have questions about DragonPlate products?

DragonPlate provides customer support via phone at 315-252-2559 and email at service@dragonplate.com. Additional resources include a detailed FAQ page (FAQ), technical guides, and account management tools for order tracking and updates. Note: Response times may vary based on inquiry volume and complexity.

Limitations & Considerations

Are there any limitations or scenarios where DragonPlate sandwich sheets may not be the best fit?

While DragonPlate sandwich sheets offer high strength-to-weight ratios and durability, they may not be suitable for all environments or load conditions. For example, carbon fiber is strongest along the fiber direction, and improper layup or unsupported edge loading can reduce performance. Not all products are biocompatible or radiolucent. For impact-critical or high-temperature applications, consider Kevlar hybrids or specialized products. Best fit for projects prioritizing lightweight strength; teams needing alternative material properties should consult with DragonPlate engineering or consider other materials. Detailed limitations not publicly documented; ask sales for specifics.

DragonPlate Nomex Honeycomb sheets are an excellent light weight composite sheet utilizing a Nomex Honeycomb core. Nomex honeycomb is the standard for lightweight non-metallic composite construction. Commercial Grade honeycomb made with aramid fiber paper (DUPONT Nomex or equivalent) coated with heat resistant phenolic resin offers excellent resiliency, low density, lower pricing and high strength to weight ratio.

Similar to our foam core product line, Nomex honeycomb is another type of sandwich panel. In essence an I-Beam, the honeycomb acting as the web, and the top skins acting as the flanges. The advantage over an I-Beam is the core creates a box structure giving the panel additional torsional rigidity. Another benefit of a core material is as the core thickness increases the panels stiffness increases dramatically. The Nomex honeycomb offers additional compressive strength with lower densities when compared to low density foam cores. Nomex Honeycomb also has properties including moisture resistance, energy absorption, and sound and vibration dampening.

The lay-up design is 0/90 uni-directional with twill weave face sheets with approximately 0.03 inches of carbon on each side of a Nomex honeycomb core. DragonPlate Nomex honeycomb core is available in satin finish on both sides.

Unlike other manufacturers of Nomex honeycomb, DragonPlate has paid close attention to the most critical component of a high quality honeycomb panel, the bond between the Nomex Honeycomb and the Carbon Fiber skin. If this bond is poor, the skin will easily peel off from the core, destroying the structural integrity of the panel. The contact area between a honeycomb core and the face skins in a sandwich composite is very small, and hence poor bonding is often a problem with these types of materials if incorrectly manufactured. Since the cell walls are thin, proper bonding of the honeycomb core to the face skins relies on the formation of high quality fillets. The fillet becomes the mechanism that transmits the loads from the skins into the honeycomb core. Without sufficient fillet size, the face skins will easily peel from the core.
